Six hours in comfort instead of at the wheel
Sofia – Varna is the longest domestic route in Bulgaria. Driving it yourself means a whole day at the wheel, and the train takes about 7–8 hours. A flight is faster, but once you add getting to the airport, waiting and a taxi in Varna, the difference shrinks. There are two main options: east on the Hemus motorway via Veliko Tarnovo and Shumen, or the Trakia motorway to Burgas and then north along the coast. When to leave
To reach Varna in the afternoon, leaving Sofia around 8–9 a.m. works well. On Friday afternoons the roads out of Sofia are busy, and on Sunday evenings the opposite direction. For a flight from Sofia Airport on your return day, we leave Varna about 8–9 hours before take-off to keep a margin.
With children and luggage
On a six-hour drive comfort comes first. For families we recommend a minivan or Mercedes V-Class, with room for luggage and space for children to move. Child seats are free. We stop as often as needed.
